George Gao “Erhu Capriccio No. 5 – Nakhi”
The Nakhi is an ethnic group inhabiting the foothills of the Himalayas in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, as well as the southwestern part of Sichuan Province in China.
The name of Nakhi in Chinese coincides with the meaning of “include the west”, though it is totally a coincidence, George Gao is inspired.
To experiment with the idea “include the west” hidden by the name, the composition is based on variations of a Nakhi style melody which combines with reggae and stride from the Americas, through the process, George Gao showcases many stunning virtuosic, and newly invented techniques for the erhu. The melodies in the middle part is accompanied by dance like rhythmic patterns, it is beautiful and exotic.
